POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
LOWELL DISCOVERY TELESCOPE SAFETY TECHNICIAN



The Lowell Discovery Telescope Safety Technician (LDT ST) has primary responsibility to be onsite at LDT to ensure the mutual safety of the LDT Telescope Operator (LDT TO) and Safety Technician during nighttime operation of the telescope. The Safety Technician position reports to the LDT Night Operations Manager



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



As part of the Night Operations team, the ST has responsibility to be in regular communication with the TO during LDT night operations. Half shifts could be scheduled. While we take into consideration shift preferences, the ST may be required to work any open shift. Emergency first aid training will be provided. Responsibilities include:




  • Arrival at LDT promptly at agreed-upon time

  • Join a video conference with the TO; check on TO frequently during the night

  • Maintain clean work environment at LDT

  • Log and report any safety issues

  • In the event of a medical emergency or accident at LDT, the ST will be required to call for emergency medical personnel and to provide emergency first aid until they arrive

  • Following safety procedures, working with the safety team



QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS




  • Familiarity with online video conferencing software

  • Responsible, reliable, attention to detail

  • Ability to work safely, reliably and independently at a remote location



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE



Qualified candidates will possess a high school diploma or GED. Prior experience with first aid and safety procedures is considered a significant plus; training will be provided if necessary. Due to the remote nature of the facility, the candidate must have a valid driver's license or be able to acquire an AZ state driver's license upon acceptance of this position.



WORKING CONDITIONS



The LDT ST works largely at the Lowell Discovery Telescope, located roughly 45 miles southeast of Flagstaff, AZ at an altitude of approximately 7800 feet elevation. Environmental conditions can be unpredictable with temperature ranges varying between -20- and +80-degrees Fahrenheit. Inclement winter weather conditions can also be expected which will require some degree of comfort and proficiency with driving in snowy/icy conditions.



Nightly operations typically require long periods of sitting at a computer station during observation periods.



This position will predominantly work at night, although the schedule can/will vary depending on requirements and the state of the telescope and instruments. Weekend work is frequently required and shifts of at least 10 hours or more can be expected due to the nearly 360-day-a-year operation of the facility. Accommodation for resting after night-time work is provided ΒΌ mile away from LDT in Happy Jack.



Status: Part Time, Seasonal


Term: 6/30/2025, with a possibility of extension based on performance and availability of hours


Hours: approximately 10-30 hours/week


Compensation: $20/hr

*Part Time employees will receive sick time accrual according to AZ state law. After 6 months of employment, part time employees are eligible to participate in a 5% match if they contribute 5% or more to their retirement plan, as well as 2 paid personal days per year.
